Mandy Patinkin Comforts Grieving Princess Bride Fan

Amanda Webb, a TikTok user, shared a clip talking about her father, who died of cancer in March. She said that he was a massive fan of the cult classic Princess Bride, and that his favorite character was Inigo Montoya, played by Mandy Patinkin. 

Amanda mentioned a rumor she had seen online that in Patinki’ns most famous scene, where the character finally confronts his nemesis, who killed his father, his memory of his own father’s death from cancer inspired him. His father died when he was only 18 years old. 

In the scene, the badly injured Montoya repeats a line he had rehearsed all his life before continuing to fight. “Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.” Count Rugen is ultimately bested by the expert swordsman with revenge on the brain. He begs to be spare, offering Montoya wealth and influence, “anything you want”, before trying to deal one more lethal blow. Montoya then stabs and kills his nemesis, saying, “I want my father back, you son of a bitch.”

Amanda tearfully tells her audience that this final line has taken on a new meaning for her after her father’s death. She expressed how she hopes that Patinkin might see her video so he would know how much the movie meant to her and her father. 

Eventually, after being tagged by countless TikTok users, Patinkin posted a video on his Twitter account of himself and his wife getting emotional as they watched her clip. He said that he was in fact thinking of his father’s death when he said the line.

“Thank you for sharing this with us,” wrote Patinkin, “We are so sorry for your loss, so moved that this movie meant something to you and your dad and so glad you asked this question.”
